SAPPHO

(Anthologia Graeca VII 489 – Σαπφώ – English translation)

Timas lies here in ashes, who even before her wedding had died,

Carried off by Persephone into her dark chambers;

And each mourner, all with a newly whetted blade – for they are her

Peers – from their lovely heads trimmed and laid down their tresses.
