VI 269, To Aethopia

SAPPHO

(Anthologia Graeca VI 269 – Σαπφώ – English translation)

NOTE: An epigram. "Queen of women" may refer to Artemis: Arista is an epithet of Artemis, also meaning "priestess of Artemis" (as a name or occupation?).

Girls! being voiceless, still I speak, if anyone should ask

And, with a voice untiring, weigh upon your feet: –

"To Aethopia am I – to the daughter of Leto – dedicated by Arista,

Born of Hermocleides, in turn born of Saonaiades:

Your attendant, O queen of women. Her name may you bless,

And kindly grant us good glory as a family."
