55, Lie dead

SAPPHO

(Lobel-Page 55 – Σαπφώ – English translation)

NOTE: Addressed to an "uneducated" and "wealthy" woman, according to Stobaeus and Plutarch.

Having died, you'll lie dead, where not ever will remembrance of you come

To be, nor nostalgia thereafter. For you do not share in the roses –

Those of Pieria; – but unseen even once inside Hades' house,

You'd wander among flickering ghosts, having drifted away.
